Album Review: Diamond Days EP – Castro

Castro_Diamond_Dreams_EP_Cover_FINAL_1024x1024.jpgWith Diamond Dreams, the debut EP from folkicana trio Castro, out September 2nd via Fervent Records, siblings Jason, Michael, and Jackie Castro take the concept of “blood harmony” to an atmospheric, otherworldly level. Their goosebump-inducing blend, a seamless, velvety tapestry of vocal virtuosity, makes the hair on the back of my neck stand at attention.

The album’s seven tracks are a group study in style; title track “Diamond Dreams”, and “Rock and Roll” are anthemic fist-pumping folk pop at its finest. Michael Castro takes the lead on “Waters Of Jordan”, a swoon-worthy nod to old school soul, while sister Jackie weaves sonic silk in “Automatic”. The three share the spotlight in rollicking toe-tapper “Heart’s Coming Home”.

The energy never wanes during Diamond Dreams, and while it seems the band rests comfortably in exploring the broad landscape covered by the Americana umbrella, they could sing encyclopedia entries and command rapt attention. Don’t sleep on this one.
