You might not be familiar with The Staples Singers, but you’re bound to be familiar with their music–the Grammy award winning gospel R&B family band featured patriarch Pops Staples and his children, Cleotha, Pervis, and Mavis (their sister, Yvonne, joined the ensemble when their brother, Pervis, was drafted into the U.S. Army). They are best known for their 1970s hits “Respect Yourself”, “I’ll Take You There”, “If You’re Ready (Come Go with Me)”, and “Let’s Do It Again”; Mavis Staples has collaborated with everyone from Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to Prince, and is still wowing crowds all over the world with her powerful presence and incomparable voice.
Los Angeles-based roots collective The Eagle Rock Gospel Singers recently released a tribute to The Staples Singers called Hammer and Nail, putting their own signature gospelcana spin on three Staples Singers classics:
