For the uninitiated, there’s country, and then, there’s Texas country. Veteran music-maker Aaron Watson‘s latest release, Vaquero, is a beautiful example of just that; between the radio-friendly tracks on the ambitious 16-song stunner are the real gems–songs like “They Don’t Make’Em Like They Used To” and the album’s title track that brim with life lessons, Lonestar heat, and desert dust. Be forewarned, the album closer is a beautiful love letter to his daughter, so have your Kleenex handy.
Shinyribs – I Got Your Medicine
Today, Austin-based singer/songwriter Kevin Russell, the man behind soulful collective Shinyribs, has released I Got Your Medicine; at 12 songs strong, the album is a delicious blend of swampy funk, boogie woogie, and steamy New Orleans-style R&B. I Got Your Medicine is 100% fun from cover to cover, and sure to be the cure for what ails you.
Southern Avenue – Southern Avenue
Bluesy up-and-comers Southern Avenue embody the sound of Memphis; recently signed to Stax Records, the band brings Beale Street to the world with their self-titled debut, firmly planting their flag on the sonic landscape. Lead vocalist Tierinii Jackson, raised on a steady diet of gospel, sings the paint right off the walls, and takes us to church at every turn.
