“Sooner or later it’s now or never, if you’re not right you’re wrong,” eye-opening words from Spirit Family Reunion as they show their support for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Lakota Nation and ally Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota citizens in their fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline with their new song, “Goin’ Out To Cannon Ball”. The band is offering pay-what-you-can downloads of the song, with all proceeds going towards supporting the Sacred Stone Camp.
The Dakota Access Pipeline threatens everything from farming and drinking water to entire ecosystems, wildlife, and food sources surrounding the Missouri. The nesting of bald eagles and piping plovers as well as the quality of wild rice and medicinal plants are at stake, and the construction of the pipeline presents a viable threat to the health, culture, and sovereignty of the Nation.
The band says, “Many of us have been moved recently by images coming from the banks of the Missouri River in North Dakota. Fire hoses, attack dogs, pepper spray – reminiscent of the segregated 1950’s – a time we learn we have since left to history. This week, many of us gather around the Thanksgiving table to appreciate the peace and cooperation between Native Americans and Pilgrims during a violent time in our history that we have long since moved beyond; yet the images we see from Standing Rock remind us that the struggle is real and it takes place today. In every struggle throughout history all over this earth, humans have used the precious tool of music to help overcome. This song was written and recorded last week in that spirit.”
